The release of this report, which the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board finalized in December 2016, was long overdue. The report makes clear that PPD-28’s protections are weak in practice and rife with exceptions. And it will likely only add to concerns European regulators already have about the ways in which U.S. surveillance harms the privacy rights of Europeans — jeopardizing an important transatlantic data-sharing agreement. Here are three key takeaways:

Virtually all other botmakers, from hobbyists to the AI wizards at big tech companies, review at least some of the transcripts of people’s interactions with their creations. One important thing to note about our test sample: It was switchable between 15-watt and 25-watt TDP modes, to represent two of the possible implementations of this processor. Like other tech companies, Amazon uses Alexa voice recordings both to personalize features and to improve the overall quality of its natural language processing skills and other artificial intelligence-assisted abilities. While it doesn’t store much of the actual data on the device itself, it does store it in the cloud, and Amazon clearly makes that information available to EU citizens under GDPR. (It also makes that data available to law enforcement with the proper warrant, which is why Echo devices have found their way into domestic abuse and even murder trials in the past.)

What is key to note here is that these instances of alleged violations of children’s privacy have occurred in the private realm, where regulations exist as to how this data should be handled. As smart city projects like Sidewalk Toronto’s Quayside project grow in profile and popularity, they have yet to identify what will happen to data generated in public by minors. Because Sidewalk Toronto may set precedents shaping future smart city planning, children’s privacy in the private and public spheres should be recognized as a national issue.

That ties into Ice Lake’s new CPU-naming scheme, which works the graphics level right into the name of the processor. That’s what the "G"-number at the end of the Ice Lake chips is all about: A "G7" at the end will signify Iris Plus graphics with 64 execution units, a "G4" the same but with 48 EUs, and "G1" means non-Iris Plus graphics with 32 EUs.

Amassing and selling your data like this is perfectly legal. While some states, including California and Vermont, have recently moved to put more restrictions on data brokers, they remain largely unregulated. The Fair Credit Reporting Act dictates how information collected for credit, employment, and insurance reasons may be used, but some data brokers have been caught skirting the law. In 2012 the “person lookup” site Spokeo settled with the FTC for $800,000 over charges that it violated the FCRA by advertising its products for purposes like job background checks. And data brokers that market themselves as being more akin to digital phone books don’t have to abide by the regulation in the first place.

It’s not clear that the current standards for which Ring videos are accessed in Ukraine, as described in Ring’s statement, have always been in place, nor is there any indication of how (or if) they’re enforced. The Information quoted former employees saying the standards have not always been in place, and indicated that efforts to more tightly control video were put in place by Amazon only this past May after Amazon visited the Ukraine office. Even then, The Information added, staffers in Ukraine worked around the controls.
